I have two of these units and am very pleased with their performance. They work with both and – R disks as well as re writable (RW) disks. It does not work with DVD-RAM/ROM disks. I recommend using component output to your TV and S Video input if available as this will produce the best picture. It provides a surprisingly good picture at the 6 hour speed but if you want to record a movie I would recommend matching the record time as closely as possible to the movie length for the best results. There is a bit of a learning curve involved in using all the features provided by the remote but it is worth the effort. I also have a professional DVD recorder that produces marginally better results but it is very complicated to use and costs over 10 times as much. Disks are cheap, much less than tape so if you want to build a home library this is a good choice.
